Even with gyms providing personal televisions on their machines and a large variety of classes, cardio workouts can be torture to get through. It’s hard enough as it is to find the motivation to go to the gym, and it can be just as hard to stay there.
Sometimes you just can’t find the right playlist or there’s nothing interesting on television. We aren’t all athletes and after a long day at work, it’s understandable to want to just go home and relax. If you’ve already managed to get yourself to the gym, then the most difficult part has already been accomplished! These tips will help you get through the rest:
1. Netflix and Cardio
If you’re ten minutes into your cardio workout and already day dreaming about relaxing on your couch at home, throw on whatever Netflix series you’re binge watching and let yourself get sucked in. The Netflix app is available for free on any smartphone, and will give you more variety than the six channels the gyms tend to offer. Not only will your workout fly by, but you might even work out longer than usual since there’s no way you can leave before the episode ends.
2. Bring a Friend
Most gyms offer free guest passes, so why not invite a friend? They’ll likely want to get the most out of their free pass, and they certainly won’t be ready to leave after just twenty minutes. Friends are also great to take classes with as it simply makes it more fun. Having someone to laugh with while attempting some crazy Zumba moves or sweating through your clothes in a spin class takes away the torment some cardio workouts can create.
3. Try Something New
If you’re stuck in a routine of the same classes and the same workouts, try something different to take you out of your comfort zone. There’s always some trend or another that promises amazing results, so take one up. It doesn’t have to be anything crazy and overly trending, it can be as simple as taking up swimming at your local town pool.
4. Go Outside
Too often people spend all of their time in stuffy gyms to get in their weekly cardio when simply stepping outside and being active will do the same thing. Take a friend you haven’t seen in a while on a hike. Take your dog to a local park and play fetch. If you were involved in sports growing up, look for adult leagues to get you back into it. If you like dancing, go to the club and just let loose! There are so many ways to get your cardio in that don’t involve a treadmill or a packed class, you just need to find what suits you best.
5. Reward Yourself
Nothing gets you through your cardio workouts better than promising yourself something if you do. It could even be something small like the next day off from the gym or picking up something sweet on your way home. If you drink, one of the best ways to reward yourself is with a glass of wine or beer when you’ve reached your goal. Pushing yourself while you’re already in the middle of your workout will benefit you in the end as it means you won’t have to make up for your lazy day during your next workout!
