Laser Tattoo Removal Pain – Does It Hurt & How to Relieve Pain

Out-of-date designs, bad memories, tattoos that have lost their shape, subpar designs, faded art, or pure embarrassment are a few of the reasons people consider tattoo removal. If you hate your tattoo, you don’t have to invest in a larger cover-up tattoo of something that you may not even want. Body Details True Laser® Centers can remove embarrassing, ugly, or unwanted tattoos, returning your skin to its former uninked condition.

Common Misconceptions About Laser Tattoo Removal Pain

Although you may experience a slight stinging sensation with tattoo removal, laser tattoo removal is far less painful than getting the tattoo was.

Tattoo removal treatments last less than 20 minutes on average, but larger tattoos, like a full-back tattoo, may require additional time per session. Body Details True Laser® Centers will provide you with a custom treatment plan, so you’re not left wondering about how many sessions or the length of time necessary to remove your tattoo.

You should see results after your first treatment. Sometimes the tattoo may appear darker because the laser first treats the deepest ink. Your tattoo removal may require multiple sessions, but our medical experts will let you know during the consultation. Body Details strives to eliminate the tattoo as quickly as possible while maintaining your safety and comfort at all times.

What Levels of Pain Should One Expect During Treatment

Similar to a tattoo, each person’s pain threshold is different, so discomfort levels vary. However, patients from Body Details often report removing the tattoo as feeling similar but less intense than when they had it done. For most patients, the discomfort is minimal. Body Details True Laser® Centers certified medical professionals work to maximize results while limiting any discomfort.

To ensure minimal pain, Body Details uses the Zimmer cryogenic device to cool the skin during the tattoo removal process. The device is administered prior, during, and after laser tattoo removal for maximum comfort. For your safety, you will be required to wear eye protection during the procedure.

BodyDetail’s PicoWay laser removes tattoos faster and safer than any other tattoo laser removal system available on the market. PicoWay True Laser® uses three wavelengths to treat various skin colors and types. The True Laser® reaches deeper into the skin while using the shortest pulses of any laser in its class. This laser system is designed to minimize the chance of damage to skin pigmentation or to leave scarring. Specialists will calibrate the True Laser® depending on your skin type and tattoo ink. This way, they can ensure safety, comfort, and effectiveness.

For aftercare, you should treat the affected area just like a cut or blister until it has healed. You should not go swimming and avoid the sun or tanning beds as you would with a fresh tattoo. The subsequent treatment should be scheduled about eight to ten weeks later.

Tips/Ways to Alleviate Pain During and After Laser Tattoo Removal

When you come to Body Details True Laser® Centers, we use the PicoWay laser, which minimizes skin heating more than any other laser on the market. We also will use the Zimmer cryogenic device to keep your skin cool during the process. There are, however, things that you can do before and after your treatment that will expedite the process.

  • Avoid the Sun Before and After Treatment – Suntans and sunburns damage the skin. By necessity, the laser will also moderately damage the skin in the affected area. For this reason, you should keep your tattoo treatment area protected from the sun before and after treatment. If you are going in the sun, use a sunblock with SPF 30 or above or keep the tattoo treatment area covered.
  • Take Tylenol (Acetaminophen) Prior to Treatment – Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen because they can cause bruising. Acetaminophen can help alleviate discomfort.
  • Do Not Apply Any Skin Products Before Treatment – You’ll want the treatment area to be completely free of any skin products, including moisturizers. You can apply moisturizing creams after treatment.
  • Eat and Hydrate Before Your Appointment – You may experience some discomfort. Showing up hydrated and with food in your stomach can help you avoid nausea.
  • Avoid Swimming and Tanning Beds – Between treatments, you should avoid activities that will damage your skin.

Frequently Asked Questions About Laser Tattoo Removal

Whether you’ve decided to have laser tattoo removal or are just starting your research, you’re bound to have questions. These are some of the most frequently asked questions by our Body Details True Laser® Centers clients and answers provided by our medical staff. If you have any questions that aren’t answered here, contact us and schedule a free initial consultation.

How Many Sessions Does It Take For Full Tattoo Removal?

The number and duration of the sessions depend on the size and area of the tattoo and a few other factors. Most tattoos require at least five sessions, but larger tattoos can take more.

Will I See Immediate Results?

Tattoo pigments sometimes take more than one session to show results. Because the laser treatment affects the deepest pigments first, your tattoo may even appear darker after the first session.

How Long Do I Have to Wait Between Treatments?

We schedule treatments eight to ten weeks apart. This provides your skin with enough time to fully heal before the next session.
